Friend Crush started in 2017 as an Instagram page where Amber Akilla would share photos she had taken and memes she'd collected while on her travels and move from Perth, Australia to Shanghai, China. It also evolved into a party series for her and her artist and DJ friends to perform with events in cities including Shanghai, Taipei, Seoul and Los Angeles. 

In 2020, during the thick of the pandemic, "Friend Crush with Amber Akilla" the podcast was born. It is an audio diary for Amber to explore her "cute, chaotic, creative and critical thinking" reflections, observations and analysis of friendship, dating culture, psychology, spirituality, authenticity, self-empowerment, pop culture and more.

In 2021, she started posting her thoughts on Tiktok where her community of like minded Angels, Baddies and B*tches began to grow. Later, she also began posting longer form video content on Youtube. These content forms have evolved into an ongoing exploration and development of Amber's life philosophy; "Being Hot & Having Fun". How can one implement practices to ensure they "feel good, look good and do good" in a way that is sustainable and authentic to them? How can we navigate societal pressures and the horrors that persist in a way that allows us to grow, evolve and achieve our goals? How can we "turn a flop into a flopportunity" so that we can redirect our attention in a way that facilitates abundance? What are the "psychological knots" that we might need to confront and slowly learn to undo in the process of becoming our best selves?

Throughout this time, Amber has considered how to extend Friend Crush into a physical form that allows it to stay true to her. With occasional merch runs, she has committed to expanding the Friend Crush brand in 2026 alongside continued content creation.
